ENGL 384: Disease & Disability in EAL

In the fall of 2019 I had the exciting opportunity to bring my research into the classroom in a focused way by developing a new course for the health humanities at Siena! In the disease and disability in Early American literature special topics course, students:

  • Gain a broad understanding of the history of disease & its depiction in early American texts
  • Explain the different between disability and disease
  • Describe how Native American and African people and medical knowledge influence colonial European medical thought and practice
  • Place current concerns and beliefs about disability and illness in historical & cultural context
