During the spring 2019 semester I taught ENGL 253: The Short Story for the first time. I chose a theme of science fiction for the course, and as it is a part of the diversity core at Siena, I selected texts from authors on 5 continents. Students also did a version on the “canon buster” assignment to further engage with diverse voices, perspectives, and genres in science fiction. The class was a great success, and I am teaching it again in the Fall 2019, with a few new stories added to the reading calendar.
